Small Farm or Large Farm: Picking a 25 HP or 45 HP Tractor is Better?

Rabi season is close, and many farmers are deciding on a tractor before the work begins. The right choice depends mostly on farm size and the kind of work done every day. A small tractor costs less to buy and run, but it can struggle with heavy implements. A bigger tractor finishes work faster, but it needs more money and more diesel.

This blog compares two popular tractors from opposite ends of the range, one for small farms and one for medium to large farms.

Which Tractor Suits Your Farm Size?

A 20 to 25 HP tractor is enough for farms up to about 5 acres. For 10 acres and above, a 40 to 45 HP tractor is a safer choice, because it can pull heavier implements and finish sowing in time.

Eicher 242 for Small Farms and Orchards

Eicher 242 is a 25 HP tractor with a single-cylinder, 1557 cc air-cooled engine. It is light and easy to handle, so it moves smoothly between narrow rows and small plots. The 8 forward + 2 reverse gears give the right speed for tillage, spraying and carrying produce in a small trolley.

The lifting capacity is 1220 kg, and the fuel tank holds 35 litres. Steering is mechanical, and sealed dry disc brake s come as standard, with oil-immersed brakes available as an option. The ex-showroom price is around Rs. 4.43-4.78 Lakh, which suits small and marginal farmers.

Farmtrac 45 for Medium and Large Farms

Farmtrac 45 belongs to the 45 HP category and has a 3-cylinder engine with 8 forward + 2 reverse gears. It comes in more than one variant, and the HP, features and price change slightly from one to the other. The PTO power is about 38.3 in the standard version, which is enough to run a rotavator, cultivator or seed drill on a larger field.

The lifting capacity is 1500 kg, and oil-immersed multi disc brakes give a strong grip when a loaded trolley is on a slope. Ex-showroom prices start from Rs. 6.49 lakh and go up to Rs. 6.74 lakh (ex-showroom).

Final Word

Pick the 25 HP model if your land is small and your budget is tight. Choose the 45 HP model if you have more acres or use heavy implements. Before buying, test the tractor in your own field and compare the final price, finance options and dealer service.
