UCU graduates 1,570 at the 23rd ceremony of the 2022 second edition
On Friday 28th October 2022, Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono graduated 1,570 students of which 828 are female representing 53% while 742 were males representing 47% whereas a total of 36 graduands obtained first-class degrees.
The Chancellor UCU Archbishop Dr. Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu while cautioning graduates about the Ebola pandemic, said that the 23rd graduation ceremony also marked celebrations for the 25 years of existence of the university.
“The benefits are many if you position yourself right to take advantage of the many opportunities. You must be immersed in an experience that provides meaningful opportunities to prove that you are capable leaders of tomorrow,” he said
The Vice-Chancellor UCU Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi, implored the graduates to go out into the world and raise the UCU flag by demonstrating excellence in word and action, making the most of the knowledge and skills they gained at UCU.
He in above picture, urged the President of Uganda H.E Yoweri Museveni to fulfill the recent presidential pledges made to the university including securing the contested piece of land in Ntawo in Mukono Municipality which is currently occupied by squatters whom he said has persistently frustrated the university’s plan to develop the land and the full installation of security lights among others.
“Your excellency, you pledged to improve the security for our students through the installation of security lights on the campus and surrounding Bishop Tucker, Cathedral and Ankrah roads. Mukono Municipality responded and installed a few lights but we eagerly await installation of more since dark corners inside and outside campus have proven unsafe for our students,” he said
Former UCU Vice Chancellor, Dr John Ssenyonyi said he spent most of the time during his tenure fighting off encroachers including some government agencies on the university’s land including UCU’s one square mile land at Ntawo occupied by Mukono Zonal Agriculture Research Institute-MOZARDI-NARO, a government agricultural research organization.
“Directors at MUZARDI-NARO use the government muscle and occupy the land illegally thus disenfranchising the university of an opportunity to create an alternative revenue base to relieve UCU of overdependence on student tuition,” he said
Established in 1997 by the Church of Uganda, Uganda Christian University (UCU) in above picture, was intended to be an authentic Christian university, where students would be nurtured to reach their full potential and completeness under the mission: “Equip students for productive and holistic lives of Christian faith and service.” to bridge the gap created between Church-founded Christian schools and Christian higher education to complete the education cycle. The university inherited the pristine and Edenic campus facilities of Bishop Tucker Theological College.
UCU in Uganda has five campuses including the Main Campus situated at Mukono, UCU Kampala Campus, UCU Arua Campus, Bishop Barham University College in Kabale, and UCU Mbale University College.
