A section of Banyarwanda who live in Uganda are currently pushing for recognition in Uganda. This is due to rumors that when some of them go for important documents like National Identification, passports and E.t.c, they are denied on grounds that they are not nationals.
In a move to propel their agenda, the Uganda Banyarwanda Cultural Association Task force have therefore scheduled meetings with leaderships of all Kingdoms in Uganda and cultural institutions in uganda namely Buganda. kingdom, Tooro kingdom, Busoga Kingdom, Rwenzururu among others to solist for their views and support for a proposed law dubbed "The Banyarwanda and other Roving communities, Citizenship, identification and Management Bill 2024.
Now, according to the press release Jori press saw, the Bill is expected to facilitate the right to citizenship, identification, certification, management and protection of the dignity of Banyarwanda. They are as well scheduled to meet the European Union representative in Uganda, the British, United Nations and the United States Ambassadors and the entire donor community in Uganda about the same matter.
The group is currently conducting country wide consultations until 1st December 2024. It is on the that very day that a major public hearing will be held at kololo Independence grounds.
The proposed law includes;
a) An amandement of Art.(10)(a) to delete and replace 1926 with 1962.
b) Introduce "Jus soli" principle of international law on citizenship by birth for all persons born in Uganda while maintaining the Jus Snguin is a principle already applied under the law.
