Prisons Boss Byabashaija Uganda Prisons Service unveils MSACCO APP to ease members’ banking

The Commissioner General of the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) Dr. Can. Johnson Byabashaija has introduced a new banking innovation dubbed “MSACCO” to support Uganda Prisons SACCO members in making quick and seamless loan repayments, saving, and accessing services easily.

According to UPS, members will enjoy convenience, security, and savings all in one app.

“Uganda Prisons SACCO takes a leap into the digital age with the official launch of the MSACCO APP and mobile money transactions. Now, members can conveniently access their accounts and conduct transactions on the go, making banking easier and more accessible than ever before” a statement partly reads.

The app was launched by The Commissioner General UPS Can. Johnson Byabashaija as Chief Guest at the Uganda Prisons SACCO AGM who was represented by Mr. Samuel Akena, Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons where members “gathered to reflect, plan, and empower each other for socio-economic transformation”.

MSACO launch

The 16th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Uganda Prisons SACCO was held on Thur, April 11th, 2024, at PATS, Luzira, Kampala.

The theme of the AGM was "Empowering Members for Socio-Economic Transformation Through Education"

The SACCO Board Chairman, CP Amos Turyashaba, while highlighting SACCO's performance was pleased to report that there was a tremendous increase in the SACCOs assets at a growth of 11%.

“The total assets have seen a significant increase from 9.398 billion to 10.404 billion shillings, representing a remarkable growth rate of 11%” he said

He said that the MSACCO APP will bring various benefits to the members which he said will encourage more savings.

“The MSACCO APP brings a multitude of benefits to Uganda Prisons SACCO members like facilitating easier saving, encouraging members to save more regularly and effectively, thus fostering a culture of financial discipline and stability,” he said

In the report, share capital soared by 50% in 2023, reflecting robust financial growth while the total membership increased from 11,886 to 12,880.

Meanwhile, President Yoweri Museveni reappointed Dr. Johnson Byabashaija as the Commissioner General of Prisons for another two-year term which according to the statement released on 3rd April 2024, will begin on May, 4.

“In exercise of the powers vested in the President under Article 216 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda and by the advice of the Prisons Authority under sections 10 (1)(b) and 18 of the Prison Act 2006; I Yoweri Kaguta Museveni do at this moment renew the appointment of Dr. Johnson O. R. Byabashaija as Commissioner General of Prisons for 24 months on local contract terms with effect from May 2, 2024,” the new appointment letter read in part.
