“My Secondary School Almost Closed Because of Lack of Funds, But Thank God These Heroes Rescued It,” Jane from Kampala Reveals

For countless students and educators in Uganda, school represents more than just a place to learn—it is a gateway to a brighter future. For Jane, a former student and school administrator in Kampala, that future nearly vanished when the secondary school she cherished faced imminent closure due to financial difficulties, leaving students, staff, and parents distraught.

Jane recalls the beginning of the crisis. “It was devastating,” she says. “We had a school full of talented students and committed teachers, yet the funds weren’t enough to keep operations going. Teachers went months without salaries, classrooms were falling apart, and students’ dreams were slipping away. At one point, it felt like all our hard work was about to collapse.”

The school had traditionally depended on a mix of tuition fees, government support, and small contributions from the local community. Over time, however, these sources could no longer cover salaries, maintenance, and learning materials. Jane and the school leadership tried every possible solution: hosting fundraising drives, reaching out to local businesses for support, and cutting down on expenses.
