Made for Clean Sheets: How Uganda Cranes goalkeepers are performing in the Premier Soccer League

It’s always tempting to rate goalkeepers’ performance by the number of clean sheets they keep, but obviously, some clean sheets are more impressive, especially those that involve multiple saves.
In the modern game, there has been introduction of deep data such as expected goals to help asses the performance of netminders. However, some of the new performance assessment methods have been met with some skepticism by many fans and pundits, too. As a result, the one statistic that is often delivered without any real context is clean sheets.
Without a doubt, there are days when a goalkeeper barely breaks a sweat to keep a clean sheet, especially if the defence is stout or the opposition poor. However, that can not be said of Uganda Cranes goalkeepers Jamal Salim Magoola and Isamil Watenga who turn out for Richards Bay Football Club and Lemontville Golden Arrows respectively in the South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL).
With more than two-thirds of the season played, Golden Arrows and Richards Bay have had a tough season so far, sitting 10th and 14th respectively in the table standings. However, former captain Denis Onyango’s Mamelodi Sundowns are odds-on to win an eighth consecutive title, though the former SC Villa man has not seen a lot of playing time.
So, how have the Ugandan internationals performed between the sticks?
Jamal Salim Magoola has featured in sixteen (16) matches and not conceded in seven (7) matches, a leading number among the three Ugandan goalkeepers playing their trade in South Africa.
Thus far in the PSL, Uganda’s current number one, Ismail Watenga, has played ten (10) games for Golden Arrows and kept 4 clean sheets.
Former Uganda Cranes captain and Africa’s number one, Denis Onyango, has so far kept goal in seven (7) matches for Masandawana and kept three (3) clean sheets.
What next…?
Jamal’s Richards Bay return to action on Friday, 18th April at home to Cape Town City while Watenga’s Golden Arrows will be away to Marumo Gallants on Saturday, 19th April.
Meanwhile, Onyango’s Sundowns are in action this weekend as they host Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semifinals on Sunday evening.
