“I Spent 10 Years Unemployed After Graduation Until I Took This Step to Land a Gov’t Job,” Okello Reveals

For many young people in Uganda, completing school or university does not automatically lead to employment. Opportunities are limited, and competition is fierce. This was the harsh reality for James Okello from Lira District, who graduated with a degree in Public Administration but spent nearly ten years without a steady job. He applied to numerous organizations, attended countless interviews, and even moved to Kampala in search of better prospects, yet nothing seemed to work. James says the struggle nearly broke him.

He recalls that during those years he lost confidence, his savings dwindled, and his family began questioning his capabilities. Friends who had studied alongside him had already found jobs or started their own businesses, while he continued to receive rejection letters. “I felt like life had forgotten me,” James says.
