From Failure to First Grade – My Personal Journey to Academic Victory

My name is Daniel Wamala, and I come from Iganga District in Eastern Uganda. Ever since I was young, I dreamed of making my parents proud through academic success, but year after year, I kept failing. I was never considered a “bright” student. In fact, by the time I reached Senior Three, most teachers had already given up on me. No matter how hard I studied or how early I woke up to read, it felt like nothing made sense to my brain.
When I got to Senior Four, everything got worse. My classmates laughed at me constantly. I stopped joining group discussions because I was always far behind. I became quiet and withdrawn. Some teachers didn’t even bother marking my work, assuming I’d just fail again. I felt like I was trapped in a nightmare. At home, things weren’t any better. My parents were worried and unsure of what to do. My father told me to leave school and join his carpentry workshop. My mother thought I should repeat the year.
