The UK Spouse Visa, often called the UK Partner Visa, is a route that allows non-British nationals who have married British citizens or settled persons to stay and work in the United Kingdom. Married spouses could live together in the United Kingdom under this type of visa.
There are a few general requirements that one must meet in order to apply for a UK Spouse Visa. For starters, most of the couple should either legally be married or need to be in civil partnerships. The partner of the application must either be a British citizen, settled (an indefinite leave to remain), or one who has a refugee status in the UK. The relationship has to be real and ongoing, which means both intending to live permanently in the UK.
Being financially eligible is a necessary part of the application. The sponsor (the British partner) must show an income of £18,600 or savings above this threshold. There are additional requirements if there are children.
English language tests approved by UKBA will satisfy the requirement or applicants may hold a degree taught in English. In addition, they have to submit proof regarding their accommodation arrangements in the UK.
A visa may be granted for an initial period of 2.5 years and its holder may apply for an extension thereafter. Five years spent in the UK under a spouse visa may entitle the applicant to indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK, thus allowing him/her to live permanently in the UK.
