20 years later, Kitintale Skate Park a hub of all social activities

In 2005, Jackson Mubiru, then a young skateboarder harbored a big realistic vision.

This was to turn the small piece of land he had inherited in Kitintale zone 12 into a destination for all skaters in the country, later on the East African region and Africa as a whole.

Mubiru’s aggression and sweat handsomely paid off with the first ever skating park not only in Kitintale favellas, but also in the entire country.

With support from partners as Skate aid international, the French Embassy in Uganda, Ambrosoli international school Uganda, Sino Afro and many others, the park drastically expanded with a skating bowl and other parts.

Come the year 2025, Mubiru celebrated 20 years of the vibrant Kitintale skate park.

The celebrations were graced by the French Ambassador in Uganda His Excellency Javier Sticker, Nakawa East Member of Parliament Hon. Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo, former MP Hon. Fredrick Ruhindi, other local leaders and the general public.

The present situation at Kitintale Skate park is promising with skating the core activity; also backed up by a public library equipped with books and computers, a skilling center that trains youth in crafts, tailoring (under Banakibuga street minds group) and bakery, a dancing area as well as a music studio.

Mubiru lauded the different parties for the support that have witnessed the drastic growth of the park with the local community as main beneficiary.

“I thank you all for the generous support towards the growth of this project” Mubiru appreciated.

“Without your involvement, we wouldn’t be here celebrating this important day in the history of skateboarding in Uganda. I would also like to thank all the people I have managed to work with under the Uganda Skateboard Union and other projects involved to help push the project forward and keeping it vibrant in the faces of the nation and the world right from 2005” he added.

Challenges:

Mubiru highlighted about the challenges he faces as the flooding at the skate park especially when it rains, high taxes from Government for donated equipment from sponsors.

He loudly called upon the local sponsors to fuel the unique skateboarding sport as he also harbors realistic plans to further expand the premises and set up more infrastructure for other projects to transform it into a complete youth community centre.

The French Ambassador H.E Sticker expressed gratitude by the perseverance of Mubiru to turn the place into a productive area used by many people in the area and beyond.

“This is good work to see such a productive area that not only has skating now, but also other activities as a skilling center, public library, dance and music studio.” H.E Sticker revealed.

Local leaders led by the area MP Hon Balimwezo all praised and hailed Mubiru’s work that has transformed the local community for the better.

There was the official opening of the dance studio, the music recording studio as the children also demonstrated their skating skills in the skate bowl.

A cake was cut and served to all the guests as a local dance troop and break-dancers entertained with extra ordinary skills.

Food was served in abundance as departure was at leisure until late night.

20 years of skating at Kitintale skate park, more fruits bore.
