Following the completion of up to 92.1% of the data mapping for the rest of the country, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBO) has embarked on the household mapping exercise for Kampala Metropolitan areas which includes Kampala, Mukono, and Wakiso. The exercise according to UBOS is scheduled to be concluded this March 2024 as the country closes into the forthcoming Uganda Census 2024.

According to UBOS, Mapping households and geo-coding area boundaries is crucial for census enumeration to ensure accurate data collection and helps develop an interactive map for effective census operations.

“A household is a group of people living together under the same roof and eat from the same pot. The mapping of households and geo-coding of area boundaries is aimed at creating an interactive map that shall be used during the Uganda Census 2024 enumeration exercise” UBOS Executive Director, Dr. Chris Mukiza said.

While launching the household mapping activities at Mukono District Headquarters on Tuesday 12th March 2024, the ED said that "Whereas the Census snapshot will be at 12:00 a.m. on May 10, 2024, there will not be any form of enumeration to be done at night; therefore, the public is warned against accepting anyone claiming to be an enumerator at night"

He added that the census enumeration supervisors will undertake effective census supervision of the enumeration exercise in the assigned supervision area, while enumerators are to conduct census enumeration in all the enumeration areas assigned and will receive their emolument payment by mobile money after the exercise.

“The Enumerators and the Enumeration supervisors should be able to get a reasonable amount of money in the form of emoluments, respectively, by the end of the 10 days of enumeration. All these payments shall be made directly to the beneficiaries' mobile numbers registered as per their National IDs” he said

The recruitment exercise has already been prepared according to UBOS Spokesperson Mr. Didacus Okoth while speaking to a Charmar News reporter. He said that after the recruitment exercise, the successful applicants will be taken through training on how to use the census gadgets as the exercise will be strictly online.

“After the selection, we shall have those who successfully went through, and trained. We shall have training at the national level, district level, and at sub-county level. Those who will be trained at the national level, will train those at the district level, and then those will train the other ones at sub-counties on how to use the gadgets,” he said

He explained that there will be training for district officials who will be responsible for recruitment at the district level and will be able to select those who will have gone through the process.

The first day of enumeration shall be 10th May 2024, and the government has declared it a public holiday.  The Uganda Census 2024 shall take place for not more than 10 days from 10th to 19th May 2024.

Meanwhile in a statement released on 13th March 2024, UBOS has extended the deadline for receiving applications for the jobs of Enumerators and Enumerator Supervisors from 22nd March-22nd March 2024.
