The Commissioner General of Uganda Prisons Service, Can. Dr. Johnson Byabashaija while a working tour to the eastern Uganda prisons especially the Main Mabale and Mbale Womens’ prisons received thunderous applause from inmates and staff of the regional prisons for the positive impactful leadership.

The Commissioner General of Prisons was on a 2-day working tour and was welcomed by ACP Ronald Gody (RPC-Eastern Region) and SSP Maureen Ninsiima (OC-Mbale)

The Commissioner General in one of his speeches highlighted the importance of improving welfare, professionalism, and discipline among prison officers while focusing also on energy efficiency, especially with the use of modern bio-gas technology.

Later he hosted Officers in Charge of Prisons and their deputies from the Eastern region, where he outlined a vision for secure, just, and ethical prisons.

“There is a need to enhance security, improved justice access, patriotism, and a commitment to humane practices,” he said

Patrick Oluka  a prisons officer said “Comrade Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, commissioner general of prisons, to me you are a star. You have made prisons wonderful. The staff, housing smartness, workmanship, and general well-being of prison services, are what you shall be remembered for. A humane approach towards rehabilitation & family preservation” he said

During his inspection of Mbale Women Prison, he resounded affirmation from Mbale Main Prison inmates as they testified in chorus to the positive impact of his leadership when asked.

They mounted praises for prompt feeding, improved meals, regular visitations, human rights adherence and effective administration, including the Day Care section which fosters crucial mother-child bonds, promotes child development and supports to holistic well-being of inmates.

The Commissioner General Byabashaija, highlighted he strategic Objectives of Uganda Prisons as follows:  

1- Provide safe, secure and humane custodial services for transformation of prisoners

2- Provide rehabilitation and reintegration services for the transformation of offenders

3- Promote access to Justice

4- Enhance prisons production and productivity while facilitating delivery of correctional services.

5- Strengthen governance, institutional capacity and accountability
