Ministry of ICT commends Huawei for the digital opportunities rendered to Ugandans
Huawei in partnership with the Ministry of Information, Communication, Technology (ICT) and National Guidance organized the 2nd Huawei ICT Congress held on Tuesday 28th March 2023 at Sheraton Kampala.
During the ICT Congress Huawei technologies showcased how their ICT technology is helping to make the world a greener and more sustainable place and discuss the trends on how we can achieve one of our NDP III goals of digital transformation.
The Theme of the 2nd Huawei ICT Congress was: Building collaborations between Uganda & Huawei to support & deploy AI in all sectors of our Economy
While giving her remarks, The Permanent Secretary Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Aminah Zawedde pictured above, while applauded Huawei for enabling various digital opportunities in Uganda called upon all innovators, tech start-ups, and BPO firms to take advantage of the opportunities availed by Huawei.
She said that digital transformation is part and parcel of all government agendas to acknowledge the fast-growing sub-sector.
“Thank you, Huawei for the enormous opportunities provided to the Ugandan population. Digital transformation is at the heart of the country & we need to acknowledge that the country is transforming at a very fast rate thus we as a ministry have been tasked with creating an enabling digital vision having the people at the center of it all" she said
The Permanent Secretary said that with support from UNDP Uganda, the ministry pf ICT has designed a digital transformation roadmap that will have a big Data utilization & Digital skilling strategy.
"We as a country have drawn inspiration for this digital transformation roadmap from tech-driven economies like Estonia which has one of the best internet connections in the world " she said
The Executive Director of NITAU Uganda, Dr. Hatwib Mugasa in above pictre, said that they are working together with Huawei, to establish a National Backbone Infrastructure (NBI) that spans over 4,000 kilometers across the country.
He said this has enabled access to high-speed internet for businesses, schools, and communities in remote areas of Uganda. The NBI enabled the successful implementation of e-government services which have greatly improved efficiency and transparency in government operations.
“We are working tirelessly to ensure that the policy's goals are achieved by providing the necessary infrastructure and support for the digital transformation of Uganda” he said
During the Huawei ICT Congress in below picture, there was exhibitions of various digital soltions, digital presentations from Huawei and other activities.
ICT is now Uganda's fastest-growing sector and contributes significantly to its Gross Domestic Product
The ICT sector in Uganda is growing at a cumulative annual growth rate of 25% and the internet penetration rate stands at 29.1%
