Makerere University Environmental Heath Students’ Association (MUEHSA) leadership has named Shafique Ssenkubuge as new President taking over the mantle from the formers President Waibi Julius. This was after conducting a peaceful handover by Kisa Keith Chair MUEHSA Electoral Commission.

Students doing Environmental Health courses at Makerere University have been urged to make self-evaluations of their courses in order to identify areas of improvement before they graduate.

This was revealed by Prof. Peter Waiswa, Team Leader Makerere School of Public Health, pictured below, during the 17th Makerere University Environmental Health Students’ Association Scientific Conference held on 10th June 2022 at CTF2 Auditorium at Makerere University.

“I challenge you to make a personal evaluation during your course time before graduation. Add the small values to yourself before completing your Bachelors. Get skills in the areas where you are still weak” he said

He told the student of environmental health that they are doing one of the best courses at the university which he said will need thinkers to solve various community challenges.

“It would be good if one gets a First-class degree, however when looking for jobs, I would consider someone who is young, smart, humble, and ambitious to work with. Therefore, I look at people ready to help us in thinking to solve problems” he said

The theme of the conference was: “Re-examining the role of environmental health in disease prevention and control”

In an interview at the sidelines of the conference, prof Waiswa said that the environmental course can produce experts that can save the environment, disease control, research, advise on proper disposal of waste, conduct environment impact assessments among others.

The Project Manager, WASH - Water For People -David Katwere Ssemwanga in picture below said “The world is undergoing an evolution and transition in many ways. The ideology of a traditional Environmental Health Official is also changing. With this degree, you can qualify for a number of posts as for the current structure of Environmental Health in the different sectors”

Environmental Health according to sources at Makerere University is a discipline that focuses on the relationships between people and their environment; promotes human health and well-being; and fosters healthy and safe communities. It is concerned about the natural and built environments for the benefit of humans.

Makerere University Environmental Heath Students’ association (MUEHSA) was established in 2003 by Environmental Health students at Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH),
