Baby Cricket Cranes on the brink of relegation after defeat to Namibia

ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers | Uganda U-19 v Namibia U-19 | Match Summary

  • Namibia 189/3
  • Uganda 68 all out
  • Namibia won by 121 runs

Baby Cricket Cranes suffered their third defeat in four games at the U-19 World Cup Qualifiers in Nigeria, leaving them on the brink of relegation from Africa’s top flight.

Namibia won the toss in the rain-affected encounter at the University Of Lagos Oval and elected to bat first.

The overcast conditions at the UniLag Oval made it very difficult to score runs but Namibia though very slow never lost wickets which worked in their favor after the rain.

Namibia collected 139/3 in 36 overs but after the DLS calculation, their final score was readjusted to 188 which meant Uganda needed 189 for the win in 36 overs.

Uganda struggled with the bat throughout the tournament, and only a special inning would get them a memorable result. However, the Southern Africans’ discipline with the ball left Uganda railing at 25/5 position and unable to recover to mount a challenge. Jonathan Nyiro (16) and Peter Ocen (12) only delayed the inevitable, as Uganda could only manage to finish on 68.

The loss puts Uganda on the brink of relegation from the top flight of the African qualifiers with only a game left in the tournament for them. They will face the hosts, Nigeria, in the final game of the tournament.

In the six-nation tournament, the top 3 sides retain their status as Division I teams while the other three drop down to the second division.
