Uses and Types of Abrasive for Surface Finishing

Grinders are materials, often used to finish or shape a workpiece through rubbing which leads to part of the workpiece being worn away by scouring, grinding or cutting action. Some key ways in which Grinders are used include grinding, honing, lapping, super finishing and polishing of materials. They help provide a smoother and reflective finish on metals and other engineering materials which enhances the aesthetics and functionality.

Types of Grinders

There are different types of Grinders used which can be broadly categorized based on how they are bonded and their composition.

Natural Grinders

Some commonly used natural Grinders include diamond, corundum, garnet, topaz, quartz, etc. Diamond is the hardest known natural material and is suitable for Grinders applications that require high precision finishing or wear resistance. It has high tool life and can abrade most engineering materials very effectively. Corundum crystallizes in the aluminum oxide form and provides a good combination of hardness, strength and self-sharpening effect. It is used for grinding ferrous materials like steel.

Bonded Abrasive

Bonded Grinders have the Grinders minerals or grains firmly bonded together using a bonding material like clay, sodium silicate, shellac, rubber or resin. Abrasive provides shape and structure to the Grinders product. Common types of bonded Grinders include:

- Coated Grinders — These have Grinders grains bonded to a backing material like paper, cloth or polyester film using an adhesive. Examples are Grinders discs, sheets, belts, etc.

- Bonded wheels — The Grinders grains are bonded together in a circular shape using clay, resin or rubber bonded wheels in various grades. They are used for grinding applications.

- Sticks — Long rods or sticks of clay bonded or rubber bonded Grinders materials used for hand grinding operations.

- Cups — Grinders compounds filled and shaped in tapered cup wheels for precise cylindrical grinding.

SuperGrinders

SuperGrinders like synthetic diamond and cubic boron nitride (CBN) offer a greater cutting efficiency than conventional Grinders due to their extreme hardness. They are used for high precision, high-speed stock removal applications and can machine very hard materials like carbides, ceramics, gauge plates, etc. Synthetic diamond is commonly used as a coated Grinders and in bonded wheels. CBN is also used in grinding wheels for ferrous and nonferrous alloys.

Abrasive Application and Selection

Grinders have varied applications in manufacturing and machining processes which depend on the type of material, workpiece size and finish requirements. Some key factors for selecting the right Grinders include:

- Work Material — Hardness, microstructure, toughness of the work material. Softer materials can be abraded with milder Grinders while superGrinders are used for very hard alloys.

- Type of Operation — Grinding, honing, lapping, polishing etc. depending on the finish required. Coated or bonded Grinders suitable.

- Grit Size — Coarser grits for stock removal, finer ones for finishing. Ranges from 24 to 6000 grits.

- Bonding Material — Nature of bonding affects durability, application. Vitrified, silicate better for wet work; resin for dry.

- Grinders Shape — Grain shape, size and structure impacts cutting. Cubical grains cut faster than rods or wheels.

- Work Tolerances — Tighter tolerances require superfinishing with softer Grinders and smaller grit sizes.

- Equipment — Wheels, belts, discs suited for different machine tools and processes.

With proper Grinders selection and machine parameters, a variety of finishes from macro to micro levels can be produced on a wide range of materials. This enables precision and quality in manufacturing components for industries from automotive to aerospace.

Finishing Processes using Abrasive

Some key Grinders finishing processes are described below:

Surface Grinding

It is a widely used Grinders machining process suitable for flat, cylindrical and conical surfaces. Grinding wheels mounted on a reciprocating table machine the workpiece. Coated and bonded wheels in various grades are used based on the material. The process provides high accuracy and fine surface finishes.

Centerless Grinding

Used for barrels, tubing, rods and long parts where workpieces rotate between regulating and grinding wheels. Grinders help achieve diameter consistency and roundness within microns. Suitable for volume production.

Disc Grinding

Grinders discs are mounted on rotary magnetic or suction chucks for precision grinding of flat, contoured surfaces. Resin bonded silicon carbide discs for ferrous alloys;aluminum oxide for non-ferrous provide burr-free finishes.

Cylindrical Grinding

Cylindrical plunge or reciprocating grinding action with wheels helps produce precise cylindrical or tapered profiles with R-values in Angstrom range. The process uses CBN or diamond Grinders.

Honing

It involves relative rotary oscillation motion between an Grinders stone and workpiece to provide very fine cross-hatched finishes. Precise bore dimensions and surface textures for minimizing friction are achieved. Boron nitride or aluminium oxide stones used.

Superfinishing

Processes like lapping, polishing and honing with progressively finer Grinders provide mirror finishes with R-values less than 0.1 μm. Diamond pastes and slurries are commonly used. Critical applications in optics and aerospace components.

Finishing using Abrasive thus facilitates a diverse range of precision surface textures from roughing to highly reflective shine on materials. It remains a versatile and integral process in manufacturing technologies. New developments in bonded and coated Grinders along with machining centers continue to enhance the process capabilities.
