Uganda Aviation Academy, Uganda Blood Transfusion Services partnership mobilizes over 95 units of blood in one day.

In a bid to address the blood shortage challenge in Uganda’s hospitals, Friday at Kololo in Kampala,  Uganda Aviation Academy partnered with Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS) to mobilize blood as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility held at the school facility located on queen’s way, Metropole building In Kampala.

Uganda Blood Transfusion Services (UBTS), is the body mandated to conduct blood donor recruitment and mobilization countrywide while Uganda Aviation Academy is an institution in Uganda, which conducts civil Aviation trainings.

During the one-day blood donation drive over Ninety-five (95) units of blood were donated organized under the theme: “Saving Road Accident Victims”.

The Uganda Aviation Academy Chairman, Dr. Captain Mike Mukula while addressing media said the partnership with UBTS for the blood donation drive is in line with the Authority’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy that focuses on interventions on Healthcare and Sanitation, Road Safety, Education, Environmental sustainability and Maternal Health.

He said that Uganda Aviation Academy is pleased to have contributed to this life-saving initiative that will impact hundreds of Ugandans with a new lease of life.

Esther Yapkoreny, the Uganda Aviation Academy `principal, reaffirmed the institution commitment to support life-saving and improving initiatives, such as blood donation. “Our dream is to create a future with more cheers,” Esther.

Esther revealed that the blood donation campaign "pictured above"  would enable the company draw attention to road safety during this period, since accident victims have been identified as among patients needing blood most. Uganda Traffic Police statistics show 218 people were killed in road crashes between 18th December 2022 and January 6th this year alone.

Doctor Herbert Luswata from Mulago hospital said that much blood is used during mother’s deliveries, accidents, HIV positive people and Malaria are the key areas that consume much blood.

“My appeal to all Ugandans is that for those who can donate blood, please do it deliberately because it could be your sister, brother, parents or your friend who will be in need of blood.” Says Dr. Luswata.

According to the World Health Organization, Uganda needs about 450,000 units of blood annually to meet the blood needs of the country, however the failure to meet the demand is attributed to several factors including lack of information and discouraging cultural and religious beliefs.
