Tanzania blocks social media platform X over police account hacking

Tanzania has blocked access to social media platform X, following a cybersecurity breach involving the official account of the Tanzania Police Force (TANPOL).
According to reports, hackers gained control of TANPOL’s X account and used it to disseminate false information concerning Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu.
The nature of the fake news has not been disclosed, but its implications prompted swift government action.
On Tuesday, May 20, NetBlocks, a global internet observatory, confirmed that X had become inaccessible in Tanzania.
Confirmed: Live metrics show X (formerly Twitter) has become unreachable on major internet providers in Tanzania.
The Tanzanian government has not officially announced the blockage, but access restrictions are in place across multiple networks.
This development comes just a day after President Suluhu instructed law enforcement to strengthen protections for social media platforms, emphasising their importance in safeguarding national interests.
