Stanbic Uganda Cup: Holders Kitara edge BUL in chaotic game

Kitara FC overcame BUL FC on Sunday in Butema, Hoima to keep their hopes of defending the Stanbic Uganda Cup alive.

The Royals edged BUL 1-0 in a game that had tempers flaring and ended with three players sent off.

Defender Arthur Kiggundu got the lone goal of the game, coming in the 84th minute.

Kitara FC had midfielder Titus Ssematimba sent off while the visitors had Jeromy Kirya and Nicholas Mwere shown marching orders by referee Henry Musisi.

The closely contested encounter played at the Royal Park in Butema had few scoring opportunities in the opening minutes.

The first realistic opportunity fell to Karim Ndugwa three minutes into the second half but his effort ricocheted off the crossbar.

At the hour mark, hell broke loose with both teams reduced to ten players.

Kirya shoved Patrick Kaddu to the ground and this caused a heated melee between players from either side.

From the same chaos, Ssematimba also had his hand into the face off Mwere.

The referee took his time before he sent off the aforementioned players.

The decisive moment of the game arrived four minutes from time when Kiggundu struck home direct from a free kick.

The defender curled the ball beyond BUL FC man-wall and beyond goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa to send the home fans into a frenzy.

Deep in stoppage-time, Mwere who had earlier on been booked got his second of the day after fouling Fred Amaku.

When referee Musisi flashed the second booking and sent Mwere off, BUL FC defender Walter Ochora in frustration pushed the referee to the ground. It was surprising that the referee didn’t send him off.

Even after the full-time whistle, BUL FC players and the technical bench attempted to attack the match officials.

Coach Abbey Bogere Kikomeko had to be restrained by stewards and some of his technical staff.

Kitara FC join KCCA FC as the two teams that have booked their slots in the semifinals.

Action continues on Monday with Vipers SC hosting SC Villa while Police FC will play Kataka FC on Tuesday.
