Reports: FUFA in talks with Desabre

The local football governing body, FUFA is locked in talks with Frenchman Sebastien Desabre about a possible return to the Uganda Cranes, three years since his unprecedented departure.

Credible sources close to Mengo have revealed to Football256 that the Federation honchos have grown weary of the current head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic’s dismal performances and are poised to bring back Desabre.

The latter left the job after a juicy offer from Egyptian giants, Pyramids FC in 2019, moments after leading the Cranes to the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Despite excellently competing, the Cranes were eliminated by a superior Senegal after a 1-0 defeat in the Round of 16, but, the tournament was deemed a huge success for the CECAFA giants.

The current head coach, Micho was reappointed in 2021 after the Cranes failed to qualify for the Cameroon AFCON. He has however endured a torrid second return to the hot seat.

The Serbian has only picked one point in the opening two matches of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers. He lost 2-0 to Algeria over a week ago before drawing one-all with Niger at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Wednesday.

For the same reasons, coupled with a lack of identity in the team, the 52-year-old has come under fire from the local football fraternity.

Last week, it was reported that the FUFA President, Moses Magogo warned about sacking him in case he fails the Tanzania test, slated for September.

In Group F, Uganda currently sits at the base with one point. Tanzania is third with the same tally whereas Algeria and Niger occupy first and second with six and two points respectively.

Meanwhile, Desabre is currently at French League II Chamois Niortais, a side he joined in 2020 after leaving Wydad AC.

In his rich managerial experience, the 45-year-old has also coached at Ismaily in 2017, Wydad AC (first spell in 2016-2017), JS Saoura in 2016, and Esperance de Tunis in 2013-2014 among others.
