Prof. Gilbert Bukenya Leads Tree Planting to Help Landslide Victims in Bunambutye, Bulambuli District

On Wednesday, Biara Emmanuel Wepukhulu, who is running for Member of Parliament for Bulambuli County under the NRM party, hosted former Vice President of Uganda, Professor Gilbert Bukenya, at his home in Buyaga Town Council. Many leaders from Bulambuli and the Bugisu region attended the event to show support for families affected by landslides and to promote environmental care.

The main activity of the day was tree planting at the Bunambutye Resettlement Camp, where people live after losing their homes in landslides in Bududa and Bulambuli. This area is dry and has suffered from environmental problems. Planting trees will help restore the land, provide shade, and improve the environment.

Children at the camp have already planted over 200 trees, showing their strong commitment to nature. However, they are facing challenges. A 13-year-old girl, Ever Namataka, said, “Trees are withering and end up dying because all our fellow children residing in Phase II do not have readily available water.” This shows that water is urgently needed to keep the trees alive and healthy.

The event also showed the power of working together. The Rotary Club donated relief items worth Shs100 million to help the landslide victims. The Welsh government also supported the families with items worth Shs49 million. These donations are helping families recover and feel cared for.

Another tree planting event was held at Nabongo Secondary School, where Emmanuel Wepukhulu studied for his UCE. This shows that involving schools and communities in tree planting helps raise awareness and teaches young people to care for their environment.

In the evening, Emmanuel hosted a dinner at his home for NRM supporters. People came together to celebrate the day’s activities and to show unity in supporting the community and the environment.

During the dinner, Professor Bukenya gave his full support to Emmanuel Wepukhulu’s political plans. Speaking to a large group of supporters, he praised Emmanuel’s leadership and encouraged the people of Bulambuli to support him. He said Uganda needs young, committed leaders who care about their people and the future.

This public endorsement has strengthened Emmanuel’s campaign and increased his support in the district. His relationship with respected leaders like Professor Bukenya gives him more attention and credibility. With this support, Emmanuel Wepukhulu is in a good position to bring real and lasting change to Bulambuli.
