Pilsner Awards: Shaban grateful for second chance at Onduparaka

Upon being named April’s StarTimes Uganda Premier League Player of the Month for April, Onduparaka FC captain Muhammad Shaban expressed his gratitude for the second chance that was given to him by the club.

Shaban has performed well since returning to Arua at the start of the season but was more brilliant in April, scoring all the six goals the Caterpillars managed throughout the month.

“When I was abandoned by everyone else, Onduparaka did not,” the 24-year-old told the media at the Pilsner Awarding ceremony at Kati Kati Restaurant on Thursday.

“They approached me and treated me as their own by giving me a second chance and I am so grateful for that opportunity.”

“How I left in the first place was not pleasant but the club left all that behind and took me back home, I dedicate this award to the Onduparaka family,” he added.

In 2017, Shaban fell out with the Onduparaka management and he was stripped of the captaincy before he left for KCCA FC.

He later joined Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in 2018, before he returned to Uganda and signed for Vipers SC in 2019.

In all those clubs, his indiscipline and attitude were always a concern but of late, he is a changed player and one would argue that returning to Onduparaka and starting afresh was the best decision.

April was a turnaround for Onduparaka who were sinking but Shaban bailed them out and they are now almost safe from relegation.

They won three straight games, Police FC 4-1, SC Villa 1-0, and Express FC 2-0 with Shaban scoring all the goals for Onduparaka before they drew goalless with BUL FC.

He has so far scored 15 league goals, only two behind the SUPL leading goalscorer Cesar Manzoki of Vipers who is on 17 with two games to go until the end of the season.

To win the awards, Shaban shrugged off competition from Vipers’ Manzoki and KCCA FC’s Sadat Anaku.

On the other hand, Vipers’ head coach Roberto Oliviera was named the Coach of the Month.

Oliviera has been nominated each month this season and has won it thrice, the most of any other coach.

Both Shaban and Oliviera walked away with an accolade, a Pilsner Plaque, and a sum of one million Uganda Shillings.
