Onyango not upset about second fiddle-role at Sundowns

Former Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango has been Mamelodi Sundowns’ first-choice goalkeeper for a long time, and one of their most important players.

But, following the arrival of native, Ronwen Williams from SupperSport United at the start of the 2022/23 season, the 37-year-old finds himself in a new role.

Onyango now plays as second fiddle in a department that also has another veteran goalkeeper Kennedy Mwene and Reyaard Pieterse.

“Kennedy (Mwene) and I are in the latter stages of our careers,” admitted Onyango to Football256, before adding: “We can not be selfish even though we want to play.”

“Every player wants to be on the pitch, but the club also has to protect itself and we have to accept that and be supportive.”

“Of course, it is an unfamiliar territory for me but I must be a leader and allow the leaders to come in and take over.”

“It is the same thing that happened to the national team. I had to step aside and the young generation came through,” he added.

Sundowns have played nine games in the Premier Soccer League this season and Onyango has not featured in any, Williams as been the man in goal.

“I have to do what I have to do and be ready for action any time I am called upon because they know what I am capable of doing.”

“For now, it is the chance for the young ones to also show what they have got and probably, we shall win more titles with them, especially the champions league,” he noted.

Onyango is the most decorated and successful player in the history of the PSL with nine trophies.

The former SuperSport goal-minder is chasing yet another record for the clean-sheets in the PSL.

He is on 123 clean sheets, three adrift of record holder Itumeleng Khune of Kaizer Chiefs who is on 126 clean sheets.
