Light SS stop Jinja SS to complete Girls Schools Cricket Week semifinal line-up

• Semifinal 1: Light SS v Sacred Heart SS – Gulu High School
• Semifinal 2: Olila High School v Masaka SS – St Joseph’s College Layibi

The odds were against the defending champions, Light SS, as they battled on the final day to secure a semifinal place at the Girls Schools Cricket Week. They were languishing in third place before their game against Jinja SS which would decide the last semifinal place in Group A.

Masaka SS did just enough to ensure that their semifinal place in their morning game against Ndejje SS, however, a bigger win margin would have helped them avoid favourites Olila High School in the last four.

The afternoon clash between Jinja SS and Light SS would decide the final place in Group A. Jinja SS won the toss and elected to bat first but they failed to engage second gear against a very disciplined bowling attack. They were bundled out for only 30, which was a below-par score against a good batting lineup.

Light SS didn’t lose many wickets in the chase to pick up a big win that lifted up from third to the top of the table. The win kept their hopes alive of winning a second title and they will face off with Sacred Heart SS in the semifinal.

Olila High School finished the group games unbeaten and they will come up against Masaka SS in the other semifinal. Sacred Heart is the other team to progress from Group B, they finished on the same number of points with St John’s SS Mukono but they progress due to a superior net run rate.

Good Heart SS and St James SS from the Nile Region are the only teams not to win a game at the tournament while newcomers Mt St Henry’s Mukono picked up three impressive wins on their first outing. Fellow newcomers Nyakasura very valiant in defeat picking up a victory out of their seven games at the tournament. Masindi SS on their second year at the tournament was very impressive and they continue to show lots of progress.

The tournament will conclude on Saturday with the semifinals in the morning and the finals in the afternoon.
