Vipers secured the 2024/25 StarTimes Uganda Premier League title with victory over Kitara on Wednesday.

Here, Ismael Kiyonga runs through the best stats behind their historic campaign

Vipers are now level with Express FC in regards to league titles

Vipers’ premier league promotion might have happened just twenty years ago but they are now level with Express in terms of league titles.

The Red Eagles had 5 titles at the time Vipers earned topflight promotion as Bunamwaya.

With seven at the moment, only KCCA (13) and record winners SC Villa (17) have more league triumphs.

John Ayala Luyinda – Fred Muhumuzza first co-coaches to win a UPL title

When Vipers officially confirming partying ways with Serbian Nikola Kavazovic, they didn’t reveal who the boss was.

Later, it was revealed that John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda who had just joined the coaching staff three weeks earlier would work with Fred Muhumuzza in co-coaching capacities.

The duo did a great job with no bickering over powers. Muhumuzza took over more of media duties and touchline work on match days with Ayala doing more of the technical and tactical work in tandem with the entire staff.

By claiming this title, they become the first co-coaches to win premier league silverware in Uganda.

Other league winning coaches at Vipers are Edward Golola 2, Da Costa 1, Robertinho 1, Kajoba (RIP) 1 and Isabirye 1.

Vipers top the premier league for goals, least goals conceded and most points since 2020/21

With a game to go, Vipers are truly deserved winners with the most goals scored so far (48), least goals conceded (14) and most points (68) and wins (21).

The wins only come second to their own record of 23 in the 2021/22 and most points (74).

Since 2012/13, only Vipers have amassed 21 wins or more and that points tally will reach 71 if they win against Soltilo Bright Stars on the last day of the season at Kitende.

They also won the league with 69 points, 20 wins in the 2014/2015 season and the other side with 20 wins was KCCA in 2016/17 but only collected 66 points.

If Vipers don’t concede more than two goals on the final day, they will have set a new record of least goals conceded beating the one set by KCCA in 2012/13 when they let in only 16 when all 30 rounds of matches were complete.

Express conceded only 13 goals enroute to claiming the 2020/21 season but that season ended with teams playing 27 matches utmost due to the covid19 pandemic.

No team has won more titles since Vipers’ first in 2009/10

Since Vipers claimed their first league title in the 2009/10 as Bunamwaya, no side has won more than the seven they have managed in the period.

In that period, KCCA have won 5, Express FC 2, SC Villa and URA winning it one each.

Vipers could move ahead of KCCA, Express with a league and cup double this season

Vipers are in the semi-final of the Stanbic Uganda Cup and lead 1-0 against Kitara from the first leg ahead of the crunch second leg tie in Butema on Saturday.

If they overcome Kitara and probably KCCA/Kataka in the final, they will have clinched their second double overtaking both traditional giants KCCA (2016/17) and Express (1995).

Only Villa (1986, 1988, 1989, 1998, 2002 & 2002) will be ahead. Vipers won their maiden and only double in 2022/23 under Alex Isabirye.
