Karan Patel was on a mission as he set the pace from the start to place himself firmly in the lead after day one of the second round of the Africa Rally Championship; the Equator rally in Voi, Kenya on Saturday.
Patel and Tauseef Khan (Ford Fiesta Rally5) dominated the morning loop of the day scooping three of the four stages. They would assert their position with a further two stage wins to seal day one with a commanding lead into the final day.
The Kenyan champions now have an advantage of 2 minutes and 27 seconds heading into the final day.
“It has not been an easy day. We lost our rear brakes in the first loop and were forced to depend on the front brakes which tend to overheat.
“Also the heat takes a toll on the drivers and the car, but thankfully we are here at the end of day 1, a very small percentage of the rally remains tomorrow so hopefully everything holds up,” says Patel.
Young rally star Jeremiah Wahome was at the top of his game pushing himself to keep within the top three positions.
In the Ford Fiesta rally3, he held onto the third position after the morning loop, eventually elevating to second position when Hamza Anwar was forced to retire in stage six.
Just like Wahome, Uganda’s Yasin Nasser continued to hold onto his pace in the top positions, landing an advantage to sit third at the end of day one.
Aakif Virane will start the final day in fourth followed by Jasmeet Chana.
Uganda’s Jas Mangat seemed to struggle with pace throughout the day but was consoled with a stage win to end his day in sixth position.
Two stages will run on Sunday with a total distance of 45.59 kilometres before a winner is declared.
