Kenya: Government appoints Federation transition Committee

The Kenyan Cabinet Secretary For Sports Culture and Heritage Amina Mohamed has put in place the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Transition Committee that will oversee football business in the country for five weeks.

The development has come at a time as Kenya is enduring a ban from FIFA for government interference in football affairs.

It also comes at such a time that their national team, the Harambee Stars is only a month away before opening the 2023 AFCON qualification campaign.

This May 13 development also comes barely a day after a Kenyan High Court verdict dismissed a petition lodged by ousted FKF president Nick Mwendwa who challenged Mohamed’s decision to constitute the initial Caretaker committee on November 11, 2021.

The latter Committee’s time expired earlier this week and has been in office for six months, hence the new Transition assembly.

The newly born Committee will have Aaron Ringera as the Chairperson, and Maurice Oyugi as his Deputy.

Among other mandates, the Committee shall ensure a valid Constitution of the Football Kenya Federation.

It will also, “conduct the affairs of Football Kenya Federation per the Constitution of Football Kenya Federation.”

“It will ensure that Football Kenya Federation operates within the provisions of the Sports Act, 2013.”

It has also been tasked with; “co-ordinating and ensuring the smooth running of Football Kenya
Federation operations, including team preparations for local and international sporting events.”

With the FIFA ban, Kenya is barred from participating in all recognized events, but, with the new Committee, likely, this will no longer be the case.
