Uganda’s Ivy Claire Amoko was re-elected to the Constitutional Commission of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

A woman Fide Master, Amoko is a Ugandan lawyer with experience at various organizations including United Nations High Commission For Refugees (UNHCR).

She is a vastly experienced player who has represented Uganda women’s national chess team for now close to fifteen years.

For over a decade, she has been the strongest female chess player in East and Central Africa.

She attained the Woman Fide Master (WFM) title in 2014, the first female in East Africa with such honours.

Amoko was first elected to the Commission in 2022. She was reelected for the second term on Saturday, 21st September 2024 in absentia.

The election was highly competitive; Amoko arrived at the congress and only spent an hour before needing medical attention.

During her absence, Uganda Chess Federation president, Eng. Emmanuel Mwaka and supporters from around the world rallied support to back her candidacy in her absence.

“Her reelection reflects the trust in her leadership abilities—not just because she is a woman. The victory was hard-fought, with all candidates closely matched, but Ivy stood out as the top female candidate, fulfilling FIDE’s requirement for female representation on the Commission. On behalf of UCF we extend our gratitude to everyone who supported Ivy’s candidacy.” Mwaka remarked.

Amoko is a member of Kireka Panthers Chess Club, in the Uganda Chess League
