FIFA WCQ, 2022: Uganda end campaign with narrow loss to Mali

Uganda Cranes ended their World Cup qualification campaign on a negative note as they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by West African powerhouse Mali in Morocco on  Sunday evening.

Nantes FC forward Kalifa Coulibaly’s first half strike was enough to inflict pain on the Cranes in a game the latter missed several good second half opportunities.

In the opening stanza, all of Lassine Sinayoko and Mousa Doumbia were denied by goalkeeper Ismail Watenga’s good saves.

In the 18th minute, Coulibaly who stood in for talisman Ibrahima Kone’s instinctively slotted past Watenga for the day’s lone goal.

In the second stanza, Uganda returned more energized, enjoying good spells on the ball and probing through the creativity of Paradou AC midfielder Allan Okello.

Okello, in the 62nd minute, slotted in a good ball to Ibrahim Orit who could not make the opportunity count for a goal, with Mali goalkeeper Ismail Diawara saving well.

Okello thought he had equalized in the 70th minute, but his strike was unluckily denied for offside.

Bobosi Byaruhanga failed to hit the target two minutes later with his stinging shot, to miss another goal scoring chance.

Mali who had already qualified for the final playoff in the win against Rwanda on Thursday sealed the campaign with 16 points.

Uganda on the other hand are assured of a second place finish with nine points in a campaign of mixed results and emotion.
