Express set to announce Kalanda replacement

Former Kyetume striker Raymond Walugembe is set to be announced as the latest addition to Wasswa Bbosa’s armoury at Wankulukuku.

Football256 understands that the player already agreed personal terms with Express. The lanky forward will stay at Wankulukuku until at least 2023 after accepting a two-year deal offer from the club.

Walugembe’s deal to Express could have come at an earlier time, but Kyetume held onto the player as he still had a running contract with the Mukono side.

Express had to first reach an agreement with Kyetume on a compensation fee, so the longer the negotiations took, the more the latter relaxed to release the striker, hence the further the deal delayed.

Walugembe will now become only Express’ third arrival this season, joining his former team-mate Joel Mutakubwa and Joseph Akandwanaho from Bright Stars.

Walugembe comes in to replace striker Frank Kalanda who was released at the end of the season.

He will now outrightly battle for a place up front with George Ssenkaaba, besides “sure starters” Erick Kambale, Godfrey Lwesibawa and Martin Kizza.

Walugembe has so far only played a single season in the Uganda Premier League (UPL) that is the 2020/21 season with The Slaughters.

His debut UPL season, marked by injuries and personal problems is one he will leave to forget. And Kyetume was eventually relegated.

The striker impressed the Express technical team when the two sides met in the first leg of their Uganda Cup round of 32 in a game that Walugembe scored as they drew 2-2.

A silver medalist with Buddu and bronze winner with Buwekula, the striker’s name is so noticeable in the Masaza Cup tournament.

Walugembe also featured in the University Football League (UFL) over three years, in which he still tops the all-time goal-scoring chart for YMCA.
