Bobi Wine recalls entertaining late Pope Francis on his visit to Uganda

Singer-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine, has reflected on the moment when he performed for the late Pope Francis during his visit to Kampala, Uganda, in 2015.

He expressed delight at having landed the opportunity, disclosing that he worked with Sylver Kyagulanyi and the Rubaga Church Choir to come up with the song that welcomed the Pope.

I am glad I got the opportunity to perform for the late Pope Francis when he visited Uganda in 2015. When he was coming, I collaborated with my friends, including Sylver Kyagulanyi and the Rubaga Church Choir. We joined efforts to come up with a song that welcomed him.

Bobi explained that he sang the welcoming song in Luganda because he wanted to communicate with the Pope in his mother tongue and freely express what was on his heart at that time.

When asked why he turned up dressed the way he was dressed, he noted that he was encouraging the youth to visit church and seek God the way they are, regardless of their status.

I sang the song in my native language (Luganda) because I wanted to freely express what I was feeling from the bottom of my heart. I dressed up as I did because I wanted the youth to feel free whenever they visit church, regardless of their social status.

Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, breathed his last on Easter Monday, 21st April 2025, after a short illness.

He passed away aged 88 from his residence at 7:35 am in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
