Mohamed Trezeguet missed penalty was one of the many talking points from the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 opening match as Africa’s representatives Al Ahly drew 0-0 with Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.
In a thrilling game that saw both goalkeepers make world class saves, Trezeguet’s penalty was saved in the 43rd minute missing on an opportunity to give the African record Caf Champions League holders the victory.
Inter Miami’s goalkeeper Oscar Ustari was the star of the day making a record eight saves which earned him the Man of the Match award.
Messi had an opportunity to grab the headline late on but his curler was tipped over the bar by Al Ahly’s El Shenawy before the Egyptians defended the resultant corner well.
In the end, both sides were good for a point in a group A that has Porto and Palmeiras who face off on May 16.
The tournament continues on Sunday with Bayern facing Auckland City while Atletico Madrid will play UEFA Champions League newly crowned winners PSG.
