Melissa Akullu has compatriot Claire Lamunu’s record at Vanguard University in sight after the centre claimed her fourth player of the week honour.
Akullu joined an exclusive list of Vanguard women’s basketball players with at least four selections as Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Player of the Week in the same season.
The conference office announced on Monday that the 6’1″ Ugandan notched her fourth weekly award, making her the third player in school history to achieve the feat in one season.
Power forward Lamunu owns the record with five citations during the 2016-17 season. Melissa Norman garnered four awards during the 2015-16 season.
Akullu averaged a double-double of 26.0 points and 10.5 rebounds as the Lions defeated Arizona Christian (78-54) and OUAZ (83-27) on the road. She shot an astounding 78.6 (22 of 28) percent from the field for the week.
Against Arizona Christian Firestorm, she tallied 21 points and 14 rebounds for her fifth straight double-double and 13th of the season. She went 8-of-12 from the field, a perfect 5-of-5 from the line and added three blocked shots.
Akullu then poured in 31 points and grabbed seven rebounds to go with a steal and a block against the Otttawa Spirit. It was her third 30-point game in the last six outings. She made was near perfect from the field going 14-of-16. During that game, she scored 17 consecutive points in the first quarter.
Overall, it was Akullu’s fifth career GSAC weekly honour. She received her first award on December 6, 2021.
Through 21 games this season, Akullu is averaging 19.7 points (16th in the country), shooting 60% from the field (4th in the country) and 11.6 rebounds per game (13th in the country).
With four games to the end of the regular season, next up for Akullu and the number 15 ranked Lions is the number 5 ranked Westmont Warriors on Thursday, February 9.
