Sierra Leone’s Alhaji Kamara struck at the death mark to grind a point for his team in a 2-2 draw with Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations Group E tie played at the Japoma Stadium on Sunday.
The goal came after Sabastien Haller and Nicholas Pepe looked to have given the Elephants all three points. Musa Kamara had scored for the Leon Stars in the 55th minute.
Ivory Coast blew up the chance for early progress to the knockout phase even though they have stayed top of Group E with four points.
Sierra Leone are second with two points and have given themselves a huge chance for progress.
The Ivorians kick-started in high gear with quick surges for an early goal and could have got it in the sixth minute but for Frank Kessie’s penalty miss, after Wilfred Zaha had been fouled in the box.
Kessie yet again missed a glorious chance in the 13th minute, fluffing over a good Zaha ball.
In the 18th minute, Zaha who had proved unstoppable on the evening set up Haller who was afforded acres of space to shoot and break the deadlock.
Sierra Leone created good opportunities of their own in the final moments of the first half but Mohamed Buya Turay missed both in the 38th and 41st minute.
In the 55th minute, upon receipt of Turay’s pass, Musa Kamara produced a nice first touch and unleashed a powerful shot past Badra Ali Sangare for Sierra Leone’s equalizer.
The Elephants found a response ten minutes later after Arsenal’s Pepe swerved in beauty into the bottom left corner for their second of the match and third of the tournament.
Both sides had chances to add to their tally with Kamara and Ibrahim Sangare missing for the Leone Stars and Ivory Coast in the 75th and 77th minute respectively.
In the 93rd minute, Alhadji Kamara capitalized on goalkeeper Sangare’s howler to level for Sierra Leone for the second time in the game. It was his first international goal in seven years as well.
Cote d’Ivoire will return to action on January 20 at the Japoma Stadium to find out if they can lead the group with a tie against fellow giants Algeria.
On the other hand, Sierra Leone, who still have a chance to qualify will take on Equatorial Guinea in their last match at the Limbe Stadium on the same day.
