AFCON for June, 34th edition dates confirmed

After the ongoing 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations was shifted from June to January due to the weather conditions in Cameroon, the 34th edition will return to June, come 2023 in Ivory Coast.

Côte d’Ivoire will host the 24 team tournament for a full month starting on June 23 to July 23 in 2023 after CAF confirmed the dates on Friday evening.

It will be the second time that the Elephants will be hosting the coveted tournament, having hosted it in 1984, which was also the 14th edition, and won by Cameroon.

For starters, this biennial tournament initially used to happen in January but that was changed by the continent’s football governing body on to June and that started with the 32nd edition which was hosted in Egypt in 2019.

However, it was pulled to the initial settings on the request of the host nation Cameroon due to weather conditions but now it is set for June again.

It is worth noting that upon being pushed to January 2021, it would still not happen following the outbreak of coronavirus until now that it is ongoing after a full year of wait.
