The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations journey that started with 24 teams in Cameroon on January 9 has left eight countries on the way home while the other 16 have progressed.
Two-time winners Ivory Coast against record champions Egypt will headline the Round of 16 fixtures as we take a look at who’s in and who’s out.
Cameroon, Senegal, Morocco, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Mali finished as Group A, B, C, D, E and F winners respectively, hence booking their slots in the knockouts.
Burkina Faso, Guinea, Gabon, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea and the Gambia were runners up of Group A, B, C, D, E and F respectively, earning themselves places in the Round of 16.
Meanwhile, the four best third-placed teams are; Cape Verde, Malawi, Comoros and Tunisia from Group A, B, C and F respectively and will also be playing in the next phase.
The above implies that Ethiopia (Group A), Zimbabwe (Group B), Ghana (Group C), Sudan and Guinea Bissau from Group D, Sierra Leone and Algeria of Group E and Mauritania (Group F) are the eight teams that didn’t make it past the group stages.
After the climax of the group stages, the tournament takes a two days break, that’s Friday and Saturday, and action will resume on Sunday, January 23.
