AFCON 2021: Ayew joins class of double figures

Ghana captain Andre Ayew netted his side’s goal as they drew one-all with Gabon in their second game of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

At Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo on Friday, Ayew scored in the 17th minute but although his goal was cancelled out by Jim Allevinah’s 87th minute equalizer, the former West Ham United forward made history.

The 32 year old scored his 10th AFCON goal, becoming the 13th player to achieve the feat in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.

He joins African legends including Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o who is top of the list with 18 goals, Ivory Coast’s Laurent Pokou (14), Nigeria’s Rashidi Yekini (13), Egypt’s Hassan El-Shazly (12).

Egyptian Hossam Hassan, Cameronian Patrick Mboma and Ivorian Didier Drogba are tied on 11 goals.

On 10, the Al Sadd player joins five others including Mengistu Worku of Ethiopia, Ndaye Mulamba of DR Congo, Kalusha Bwalya of Zambia, Joel Tiehi of Ivory Coast and Francileudo Santos of Tunisia.

It is also important to note that amongst all the 13 players with double figures, he is the only one still active, all the others are all retired meaning he can catch up.

Ayew is ahead of fellow Black Stars in Asamoah Gyan, Osei Kofi who are on eight and his father, Abedi Pele who managed seven AFCON goals.

In Cameroon, he will be hoping to add more goals starting with their final Group C game against Comoros on Tuesday, January 18.

The four time AFCON champions are on a single point after two games and find themselves in a must win situation if they are to have any slightest chance of advancing to the knockout stage.
