The fifth edition of the Eric Hodgson Memorial football tournament has been postponed to early March 2023.
The tournament was scheduled to take place on 5th February 2023 at the Kanyanya community sports ground but has now been extended ahead due to unforeseen circumstances and conditions.
According to chief organizer Ali Ssenkunda, the chief executive officer at Everton Uganda Academy, the tournament will now be played in the first week of March.
“The Eric Hodgson memorial football tournament for 2023 has been pushed ahead to March in the first week. This is due to unforeseen circumstances. We regret to stakeholders for the inconvenience caused” Ssenkunda revealed.
This year’s tournament will make the fifth edition since the unfortunate demise of Eric Hodgson (8th March 1932 to 24th December 2017), the founder of Everton Uganda Football Academy.
Over 30 teams will take part in this tournament in the U-13 boys, girls (open) as well as amputee football for the disabled persons on a free entry basis for all teams willing to take part in this championship.
There are certificates of participation, trophies, medals that will be given out as well as a ball each per participating team.
There will be other activities as blood donation and testing (for HIV/AIDS).
Hodgson laid a pivotal fundamental stone to Everton Uganda chapter with the strong foundation base as many talented male and female footballers have been identified and nurtured with a big fraction able to attain education bursaries.
Last year, Sparta 09 team won the boys’ U-13 category played at the Mulago Hospital playground.
Because of the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, the editions in 2020 and 2021 were not held.
