2025 Seventh Day Adventist schools’ sports fete set for Bugema University

It will be post-Sabbath vibes as the different schools inclined along the faith of Seventh Day Adventists (SDA) religious sect once again meet together in a sports tournament this Sunday.

This will be during the 2025 Inter-SDA schools cup, an annual sports tournament organized by the Adventist Secondary School Sports Association (ASSSA).

The day-long championship will take place on Sunday, 22nd June 2025 at the Bugema University main campus playgrounds

Football, netball, volleyball and basketball are the games that will be played from morning till evening.

The tournament that has been bringing together all Seventh-day Adventist affiliated secondary schools since 2004.

The aim of the Inter-SDA Schools cup has always been to bring about unity and a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood in sports disciplines such as football, netball, basketball and volleyball.

For starters, the first edition was held in 2004 at Katikamu SDA SS Wobulenzi where the hosts emerged overall  champions.

The first ever MVP for football was left back Hussein Mbabali of Lakeside College Luzira, then an S.4 student in 2004.

The second edition was held at Bugema Adventist Secondary School and Bugema University while the 2006 edition was held at Merryland High School.

Down the drain, many editions have been held with a variety of champions taking home trophies in various disciplines.

However Merryland High School has claimed the boys basketball top prize for the last 3 years hence showing its dominance.

Katikamu SDA Wobulenzi still remains the undisputed champion in volleyball for both boys and girls but will face competition this time round from Hilton High School Mukono who missed out last year.

Light High Seguku has clinched back-to-back titles in boys’ football and has won one trophy for football girls football with Amazing Grace Luweero coming back as defending champions.

Light College Katikamu return as Netball defending champions but will face tight competition from former winners Merryland High School, Amazing Grace among others.

Last year witnessed 17 schools show up for the tournament and there’s a lot to play for when the one day tournament returns on 22nd June 2025 at Bugema University and Bugema Adventist Secondary School.

The Adventist Secondary School Sports Association (ASSSA) chairperson is Amos Kanaabi, the headmaster of Katikamu SDA Nakaseke, working along Moses Tusuubira as the competition director, among other officials.

Tusuubira reveals that the championship has produced different stars in the various sports disciplines.

“The Inter-schools SDA sports tournament continues to discover new talents and provide a platform for future stars.” Tusuubira remarks.

Moses Kaddu formerly at Lakeside (now manager Administration and Operations at KCCA Football Club), Bernard Agele and Asuman Alishe formerly at Katikamu SDA Wobulenzi (both former SC Villa players), Davis Kasirye formerly at Midland and Merryland High Schools (Has Played for multiple Ugandan clubs), Otim Dickens formerly at Katikamu SDA Wobulenzi (prominent volleyball player for the national team and Sport-S club) among others, are vivid products.
